Medical Electrophysiology Student Hypertext

It all started like this.

I have another 2 years of studying to graduate from Medical Electrical Physiology. Now is the time to imagine what I could do when I finally get my diploma.
Choice 1: Find a job here in Montreal.
Choice 2: Leave Montreal and find a vacant position here in Canada.
Choice 3: Try to work in different countries for 2 or 3 years in each.






























Scene 1.

If I prefer to find a job in Montreal. I could pick up one of these options:
Choice 1: Try myself in cardiology.
Choice 2: Neurophysiology is my other option. I will learn the brain functions and will get the invaluable experience in determining of different neurological disorders including epilepsy.
Choice 3: Finally, I could try myself in pediatrics.






























Scene 2.

In this case I learn the ropes in heart diseases and diagnoses. Probably, I have a lot of leg work here as it is necessary to come in handy in many different departments to fulfill the ECG test.
Choice 1: I am overwhelmed with a maddening rhythm and a lack of time to have a short break.
Choice 2: I try to do everything thoroughly and to pull off by any means.






























Scene 3.

I decide to stay working in cardiology for a while.
Choice 1: I analyse my time management and do my best to improve my fulfillment, avoiding at the same time a cursory job.
Choice 2: More and more often I get sure that I have made the right choice.






























Scene 4.

Probably, I will decide to take another course in Ahuntsic College and will have another year of studying. So that, I will take a course of echography and will return to my practice in cardiology as a specialist with more skills. In this case I work with a cardiologist and most of the time I am involved in one cardio test only.

I decide to work in this field till my retirement.

I am exhausted and tired, but very happy at the same time.
Choice 1: I get a premium wage very quickly.
Choice 2: I have lots of work and quite often stay overtime.

Scene 9.

Neurology is a field that I have been interested for a long time. It is very interesting to get understand some regularities of various pathologies and diseases.
Choice 1: I work in the hospital.
Choice 2: I find a job in the research center.






























Scene 10.

I have lots of different patients and make a lot of analyses of electroencephalograms.
Choice 1: Dealing with some patients is not an easy thing at all.
Choice 2: EEG analyses impress me more and more.

I really need to take a phychology courses.

It is just amazing, how much the signals of the brain can tell about the conditions of a patient and and the reasons of the pains and revealed symptoms. I want to participate in the workshops and conferences and learn this field more and more.

Choice 1: I work with the team of scientists specialising in the research of brain reactions to the different life situations like stress.
Choice 2: I work in collaboration with Russian Research Center.

It has been always a question for me as well. What influence the particular reaction of any human being. Is it our brain that controls the body or the different chemicals of our body affect the brain?

Choice 1: I have risk of getting sucked up in the local gossip and affairs.
Choice 2: I start working as a trainee and have on-the-job-training with more experienced professional.
Choice 3: I am lucky to find a job in Ottawa in the research center, specialising on creating and testing the new medications.






























Scene 24.

Now I need to make a personal decision. I can ignore this aspect or to take it as a factor that really hinders my successful career here.
Choice 1: I putt aside all my emotions and continue working as usually. I have a strong persuasion that any bias is just a drawback for my professional growth.
Choice 2: I come to know all ins-and-outs of the local society.

Usual day of a medical electrophysiology

Hello everybody, my name is Alexandra, and I am studying Medical Electrophysiology in Ahuntsic College. When I am graduated I could work as medical electrophysiology technician in the hospitals, private clinics or other medical centers where they could provide medical services of this type. Now I want to explain my daily multi-purposed duties and what tests I will be responsible for as a medical electrophysiology technician. Generally I would like to point out that electrophysiological tests are usually used in the modern medicine to determine pathologies, investigate its' causes and finally choose the best treatment for each particular case. Medical electrophysiology technicians assist the doctors to diagnose certain diseases. ______________________________________________________________________

All electrophysiological tests are done with the electrodes that are put on the investigating area – the heart or brain, for example. They reveal tiny electrical impulses producing by the organs. Then these electrical signals are amplified by the machine and are recorded on to the paper or computer. Each electrode has its own normal rates. Different disorders and diseases produce abnormal traces. It’s important to emphasize that the body of any human being produces its own electricity. No electricity is put into by the ECG machine. All electrophysiological tests are unpainful and they do not cause any side effects.

The commonly known electrophysiological tests are Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Encephalogram (EEG).
Electrocardiogram (ECG)….?

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is needed mostly to determine strange or pathological rate of heart beating and the reasons of the aches in the chest.

An ECG test registers the activity that heart produces during distribution of very small electrical signals in different directions. This tiny electrical impulses are recognized and recorded by the special ECG equipment or device. It is usually needed to be done to reveal some heart disorders as irregular heart rhythms (too slow or too fast) or enlarged heart as well as certain heart diseases as myocardial infarction happened recently or some time ago. Very often this test is a part of a routine examination, when a person is hired for a new job or a part of a yearly check up, for example. 
 Electroencephalogram (EEG)?
The electroencephalogram (EEG) is mostly needed for the patients who suffer seizures of epilepsy or have the relevant symptoms. But not always doctors could diagnose epilepsy with EEG test.

During the test the technician registers the electrical activity of the brain. Constantly the brain cells and nerves produce very small electrical impulses that are caught and recorded by the EEG machine or device. During the EEG test the technician put small electrodes on the scalp of the patient and then connect him or her to the electroencephalograph for 20-30 minutes. At the end of the test all electrodes are removed.

Regardless if the patient lies on the couch or sits in the chair during the EEG test the technician could ask him or her to breathe deeply or blink. Sometimes the technician could use a strobe light to determine if it changes normal brain patterns. For most people those patterns stay the same. These specific types of EEG test are necessary to trigger the brain reaction that could be associated with certain types of abnormalities or pathologies.

Sometimes to determine any varieties of the normal brain pattern the EEG test is performed when the patient is sleeping. This is done when the seizures happen during sleeping or caused by the fatigue. In this case the patient should be hospitalised.

Electrophysiology is the biomedical field dealing with the study of electric activity in the body. Electrophysiology includes the registration and interpretation of  the production of electrical activity and the effects of that electrical activity on the particular organ or the whole body. 

Medical Electrophysiology technician uses various digital and electronic devices in order to pick up, record and analyse the bioelectric potential emitted by the various biological systems. The technician has both theoretical and practical training at the college level for three years to be able to work in the following six specialized domains: cardiac, cerebral, neuromuscular, labyrinthic, evoked potential and polysomnography.

The website provides all information necessary to understand what are the risks of the most common heart problems like arrythmia, tachycardia, heart attacks, angina (chest pain), etc. The site explains clearly the symptoms and diagnosis as well as the prevention measures and treatments of most  heart diseases. Here everyone could also find additional information about congenial heart defects, the cholesterol rates and why it is so important for your heart health. The whole section is devoted to the problem of High Blood Pressure, it's causes, symptoms and risks.

The neurological and brain diseases and problems could be detected by the EEG (Electroencephalogram) diagnostic test. This test is also done by the Medical Electrophysiology technician. During the test the technician measures the small electrical impulses, which are  created between the brain cells or neurons. EEG can't determine a person's intelligence. 

EEG test is primarily used to determine brain disorder (epilepsy) and the type of seizures. In this case normal electrical activity of the brain is altered. EEG tests are also used to check brain injures, ascertain reasons for unexplained faints, check out memory disorders (like Alzheimer's), check for various tumors and brain cancers and diagnose sleep disorders.   More information about how the test is made, what are the results, if there are any risks and much more you can find in the site of Health Line

Polysomnography or sleep study is used to diagnose the different sleep disorders and problems including sleep apnea syndrome or snoring. During polysomnography test a Medical Electrophysiology technician records brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements.

Medical Electrophysiology Glossary

Medical Electrophysiology is a college program. Generally, Electrophysiology deals with the different registrations of the electric activity  of the human being. All those registrations are necessary to determine the heart diseases or disorders of the nervous system. During their studying the students are taught how to make electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, electronystagrams, etc.

Glossary Heading

1. Cardiology
The study of the heart and it's functions in health and disease. 

2. Aneurysm
A localized, pathological, blood-filled dilatation of a blood vessel caused by a disease or weakening of the vessel's wall.

3. Cardiac arrest 
A temporary or permanent cessation of the heartbeat.

4. Catheter
A thin, flexible tube 

5. Coma
A state of unconsciousness from which a person cannot be aroused. 

6. Concussion  
A jarring of the brain, caused by a blow or a fall, usually resulting in loss of consciousness.

7. Cramp  
A sudden, involuntary, spasmodic muscular contraction causing severe pain, often occurring in the leg or shoulder as the result of strain or chill. 

8. Diabetes 
A polygenic disease characterized by abnormally high glucose levels in the blood; any of several metabolic disorders marked by excessive urination and persistent thirst. 

9. Dizziness
A sensation of whirling and a tendency to fall; giddy; vertiginous.

10. Electrocardiogram 
A tracing of the electric currents that initiate the heartbeat, used to diagnose possible heart disorders. 

11. Electrophysiology 
A branch of physiology dealing with the electric phenomena associated with the body and it's functions.  

12. Epilepsy
          A disorder of the nervous system, characterized either by seizures.
 
13. Exhale 
To breath out. 

14. Fainting spell
An instance of a loss of consciousness caused by a temporary lack of oxygen to the brain.

15. Groin 
The area where the thigh meets the hip. 

16. Haemorrhage 
Profuse bleeding from ruptured blood vessels. 

17. Heart attack 
Sudden interruption or insufficiency of the supply of blood to the heart; also called myocardial infarction.

18. Hypertension 
Arterial disease in which chronic high blood pressure is the primary symptom. 

19. Hyperventilate 
To breathe in an abnormally deep, long, and rapid manner, sometimes resulting in cramp and dizziness. 

20. Pacemaker
A system that sends electrical impulses to the heart in order to set the heart rhythm.
